Oregon Desert Land Trust has been acquiring private acreage within the Diablo Wilderness study area. In the area known as Lost Cabin, the namesake weathered cabin oversees a unique area. Natural springs have shaped the sandy desert soil and created unique land forms. The springs attract birds, wildlife, and parched hikers passing through the Oregon Desert Trail.
How to Get There
The Lost Cabin property can be accessed by hiking. The property can be reached from Bend by driving 25 miles south on Highway 97 and turning east onto the Highway 31(Fremont Highway) and continue 69 miles to the town of Summer Lake where you can turn east (left) onto Thousand Springs Road and continue 4.15 miles. Visitors can park along the road and hike 4.5 miles along an old two-track road to the northern edge of the property.
