The Brothers Area is part of the Priority Area for Conservation (PAC) for Greater sage-grouse. The area includes stunning views of the Cascade Mountains to the west and is home to ashen soils created from the massive eruption of Mount Mazama (today’s Crater Lake) more than four thousand years ago. Sitting only 45 minutes east of Bend, the land and neighboring landowners are feeling the strain of being fairly close to one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the country.
These 320 acres of working lands were homesteaded in the late 1800s and gifted to the Land Trust by the Shaw family. A partnership with neighboring Hatfield Ranch allows limited grazing while researchers study local greater sage-grouse populations.
